Intensive Therapy Program

Mobi Kids Intensive therapy program

Our intensives are designed to deliver greater gains in a shorter period of time

Intensive therapy accelerates progress through an increase of therapy over a short period of time. Intensives are suitable for all ages and varied diagnoses. A child can undertake one or multiple therapies every day over three-week blocks working towards a short-term goal. Recommendations for frequency and duration of intensive therapy blocks are based on the individual child and family’s needs.

What is the Intensive Therapy Program?

In the Intensive Therapy Program, your child receives an hour of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy for 5 days a week over 3 weeks. Depending on your child’s needs, they may even do two or all three of these therapies in one day! At the conclusion of each Mobi Kids Intensive, you’ll be taught and given a take-home program to support and maintain the gains and progress your child has made.

The traditional model of therapy typically involves an hour of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and/or speech therapy on a weekly or fortnightly basis. The task specific approach and high volume of repetitions capitalises on the neuroplasticity of the brain. This has been shown to accelerate functional and developmental progress towards the goals for each intensive block.

Intensive Therapy Program FAQs

Intensive therapy accelerates progress towards a short term goal through an increase of therapy frequency over a short period of time. Intensives are suitable for all ages and varied diagnoses. A child can undertake one or multiple therapies including physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy every day over a three-week block. Recommendations for frequency and duration of intensive therapy blocks are based on the individual child and family’s needs. Your child will need to have an initial evaluation assessment prior to participating in the intensive therapy program to ensure their suitability.

Intensive therapy is a great way to:

  • Accelerate progress towards goals in a short duration of time
  • Facilitate high volume of repetition to capitalise on brain neuroplasticity
  • Engage in task specific approach to therapy that is functionally meaningful
  • Implement goal directed therapy that is safe for children with various diagnosis
  • Learn and develop the confidence as a parent/ carer to facilitate home exercise programs given by your therapy team
  • AFOs/ Braces
  • Supportive suits i.e. Second skin or DMO
  • Healthy snacks, water bottle
  • Regular shoes that fit without AFOs and socks
  • Any other equipment you would like to incorporate in the session (walkers, leg/ arm wraps, wheelchairs, etc)
  • Favourite toys or books
  • Tablet with shows or music for motivation when therapy gets tough, or you child has a break
  • An extra change of close in case of an accident
  • AAC device or communication tools
  • Extra nappies and wet wipes
  • Easy to move in, block coloured and breathable clothing is ideal. Please bring socks and good running shoes if you do not have any specific therapy footwear.
  • Recommended: A lightweight T-shirt, long lightweight pants or leggings, and joggers.
  • Not recommended: Jeans, tracksuit pants, poor stretch materials. Patterned clothing (i.e. stripes or dots) can make it more difficult for your therapist to spot your child during exercises.

Prior to booking an intensive therapy session, all new Mobi Kids families will need to fill out our Mobi Kids Initial Participant intake form to be assessed by our Intensive coordinator. All new Mobi Kids clients will also need to have an Initial Physiotherapy/ Occupational/ Speech Therapy Evaluation Session prior to participating in an intensive to assess their suitability for intensive sessions.

All therapy recommendations will be reviewed prior to the start of the therapy program and again upon actual assessment on the first day of your child’s appointments. Please note the first day of your child’s intensive / weekly session may involve a full evaluation so their goals and program can be finalised appropriately. We may also need to modify the program once we have seen how your child adapts to the therapy programs.

It is important that you keep us updated on any changes, developments, or regressions your child may have. Please inform our team if there are any medical procedures, seizure management plans, or changes to their diagnosis.

All children in the program must provide current information about their hip health. If your child has known hip instability, please submit the latest hip report and x-ray before starting therapy. If you’re unsure, consult your child’s doctor to check for any concerns, and update us with their response. Keeping the Mobi Kids therapy team informed of your child’s latest hip status is crucial, as it may influence the therapy plan.

In certain cases, written medical clearance from your child’s specialist team may be required before starting an Intensive session. We recommend informing your child’s paediatrician that they are joining the Mobi Kids Intensive program.

Yes! A home exercise program will be taught to parents and carers in the last week of the intensive program. It is encouraged that parents or carers record this on their devices to easily reference when practicing at home.
